What is masking SMS?
With masking SMS, a name appears where the sender would be — for example YOURBRAND. Customers know who sent the message the moment they open it. This name is called a sender ID or mask. It can be up to 11 characters long and needs approval from the mobile operators, usually within 1–3 working days.
What is non-masking SMS?
With non-masking SMS, a mobile number appears as the sender. There is no approval to wait for: you can send as soon as your account is live, and it costs less. It is the most common choice for OTP, alerts and internal notifications.
Side by side
| Masking | Non-masking | |
|---|---|---|
| Sender shown as | Your brand name | A mobile number |
| Price (per SMS) | From ৳0.48, MNP extra | From ৳0.28, MNP included |
| Approval | Needed, 1–3 working days | Not needed |
| One-time fee | ৳500 per sender ID | None |
| Best for | Orders, bills, offers | OTP, alerts |
When to choose which
- Choose non-masking for OTP, login codes, internal alerts, or wherever keeping costs low matters most.
- Choose masking for order confirmations, bill reminders, offers, or any message where customer trust matters.
- Use both — many businesses send OTP with non-masking and everything else to customers with masking.
A cost example
Say you send 20,000 SMS a month. With non-masking, that costs 20,000 × ৳0.32 = ৳6,400, MNP included. With masking, it costs 20,000 × ৳0.50 = ৳10,000, plus the MNP charge and a one-time ৳500 masking fee for a new sender ID.
Remember that rates are per SMS part. A Bangla message longer than 70 characters goes in two parts, so short, clear messages cost less.
The bottom line
If you want to start quickly and cheaply, begin with non-masking. If customers need to see your brand name, apply for masking alongside it — we help with the paperwork for free.
